Don’t Disqualify Yourself—Evert’s Testimony

My Story—by Evert

I’ve been at AGIF since the beginning, 8+ years. I’ve served in various capacities: Usher team, Children’s Church, I have even spoken a few times at services. A few years back, my life was taking some hard knocks from several directions. Eventually you get to a point where you’re just hanging on and you start to feel spiritually dry. You start to disqualify yourself from serving in the church, but that’s the lie from Satan. Nobody is disqualified from serving God! For two main reasons: If you’re going to wait until your qualified, you may never do anything within the church and second if you wait until you think you are qualified then you may not need God! This was a big challenge but I just kept hanging on.

A year and a half ago there was an outreach trip, the potato project. Something deep in my soul told me I should sign up, even though I felt I wasn’t going to be able to help the people there. It was a tough trip spiritually and physically, but the amazing thing was that God put me together with a roommate that had gone through the exact experience that I was currently facing in my life. A lot of healing took place from that.

The following year, just this past year, Pastor Nate came up to me and said “Why don’t you organize a mission trip?” Automatically I felt, oh I don’t really feel qualified, but there again I felt the Lord saying I should go for it and it was truly amazing.

When you go out on a mission it can actually be a mission in reverse. When you serve the Lord it compels you to take your prayer life, reading of the word, and fellowship a lot more seriously. On the trip, on a Saturday night, a local member of a house church told me, tomorrow you’ll need to share for 2 hours! I had to rely completely on God to lead me, and it ended up being one of the most amazing experiences of my life. Then last year Pastor Esme said to me “Why don’t you organize another trip to a new location”. Seeing what God had done in the past, when I was obedient, I went for it and again it was amazing. There were 8 of us on the trip and we had to fully rely on the Lord. We went to many villages and the last village of the trip was a non-Christian village, and at the last house a women gave her life to the Lord! Finally, a few months back pastor Brad got a men’s prayer group going in our compound and then handed it over to me, which has been a very rewarding experience for all of us in the group.

I want to encourage you all: Never disqualify yourself from serving in the church. It is God’s work and He can do amazing things through our availability to serve.
