Daniel Fast Day 33
Reading: Daniel 5:13-31
“Tekel means ‘weighed’ —you have been weighed on the balances and have not measured up.” (v 27 nlt)
Daniel is brought in to interpret the meaning of the handwriting on the wall. For the king it is not good news.
Because of his arrogance, abuse of power, and refusal to honor the one true God, his reign will come to an end. “You treat with contempt the living God who holds your entire life from birth to death in his hand” (v 23 msg).
God’s performance appraisal of the king shows a leader who doesn’t measure up. Not only will he surrender the crown, but his government will be forcefully taken over by foreigners.
In fasting we submit to God who holds our entire life from birth to death in his hand. We want to know God’s evaluation, especially when we are found to be lacking, when we are out of step with his Spirit. We want our lives to be reshaped by his values, his purpose, his future.
Investigate my life, O God,
find out everything about me;
Cross-examine and test me,
get a clear picture of what I’m about;
See for yourself whether I’ve done anything wrong—
then guide me on the road to eternal life. (Psalm 139:23-24 msg)
