Daniel Fast Day 23
Reading: Daniel 3:19-30
Then Nebuchadnezzar said, “Praise to the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego! He sent his angel to rescue his servants who trusted in him. They defied the king’s command and were willing to die rather than serve or worship any god except their own God.” (v 28 nlt)
The three young Hebrew expats were thrown into the fire—with flames so intense that it killed the soldiers who threw them into the blazing furnace. And yet they walked out of the fire some time later with no burns and their hair and clothes untouched by the fire. Not even the smell of fire on them.
So clearly a miracle that even the king acknowledged the power of Yahweh. And the king put an end to the effort to force Hebrew expats to abandon Yahweh for the gods of Babylon.
People close to the king saw the worship of Yahweh as a threat to the king’s power and authority. How could you honor the king if you held a higher allegiance to Yahweh? Sometimes we see love for God as competing with our love for country (patriotism). As the king learned, worship of Yahweh produced leaders who were both inflammable and incorruptible. These were persons to promote.
God, give me purity of worship that clarifies all my other loves and loyalties. Give me courage to face pain, even death, rather than compromise my faith in you.
