Daniel Fast Day 20
Reading: Daniel 2:45b-49
We’re half-way there. I hope you’re enjoying our Daniel Fast, and pray that we all continue to savor new flavors of vegetables and of God’s grace.
“Surely your God is the God of gods and the Lord of kings and a revealer of mysteries, for you were able to reveal this mystery.” (v 47)
The king was impressed with Daniel’s recalling his dream of an enormous, dazzling statue, made of gold, silver, bronze and clay. And Daniel was also able to interpret the king’s dream, giving him a glimpse of future political developments in Babylon.
The king was so impressed with Daniel’s interpretation that he fell on his face in awe before him. He made Daniel governor over the province of Babylon, and put him in charge of all his advisors.
We have a fascination with the future, and we give special respect to prophets like Daniel who are gifted to anticipate what will happen in the future. At the same time we are warned in the Law of Moses not to consult with mediums, fortunetellers, or persons who consult with the spirits of the dead (Lev 19:31; 20:6; 20:27; Deut 18:10).
God knows the future, and sometimes gives us prophetic glimpses of what is coming to be. Most of the time we must be content to trust the one who holds the future and who also guides our steps day by day. “Listen for GOD’S voice in everything you do, everywhere you go; he’s the one who will keep you on track” (Prov 3:6 msg).
God, I am listening for your voice today. It’s not easy to distinguish your voice among all the voices I hear every day. Fill me with your Spirit so I can hear you, so I can walk humbly and confidently into the future.
