Daniel Fast Day 14
Reading: Daniel 2:22-23
“God reveals deep and mysterious things
and knows what lies hidden in darkness…” (v 22 New Living Translation)
Daniel seems to have written a song at this miraculous moment. God spoke into a crisis and saved the life of the Hebrew friends, and also of many other court advisors whose lives and families were at risk to the demands of an angry, agitated king.
Maybe the song itself was a gift of the Spirit at that miraculous moment during the night. Or perhaps it was a song that Daniel shared in the prayer meeting with the three other young men the next morning. Here are the last two stanzas of the hymn:
God reveals deep and mysterious things
and knows what lies hidden in darkness,
though he is surrounded by light.
I thank and praise you, God of my ancestors,
for you have given me wisdom and strength.
You have told me what we asked of you
and revealed to us what the king demanded. (vs 22-23 nlt)
When we fast, we ask God for insight into deep and mysterious things. Family matters. Issues we face in our job or career. Understanding the Bible. Guidance for our small group, for the church, for the leaders of Shanghai and China. God is a work in ways far beyond our understanding. We fast in humility recognizing that God’s power at work in us can do far more than we dare ask or imagine (Eph 3:20).
God, I praise you for the gift of revelation. Speak to me through your word, through your living Word, and through your Spirit. I stand in awe before the mysteries of the universe, of the human mind and body, of marriage and the church. Give me wisdom and strength for the tasks of today. Give me insight that I need for the mysteries of today.
