About: Dr Nathan D. Showalter was one of the founding leaders of Abundant Grace in 2005 and has served as senior pastor since 2008. Before moving to Shanghai in 2003, Nate worked in leadership and community development in the U.S., Asia and Africa, serving for eight years as pastor of Taipei International Church and for six years with World Vision in California, Hong Kong and Taiwan. 

An ordained Mennonite minister, Nate is married to Dr Christina Lee who works as an executive coach and management consultant in addition to her ministry with Abundant Grace. Their son Eli works as a graphic designer in New York City. Nate holds degrees from Eastern Mennonite University (B.A. 1971 cum laude), Fuller Theological Seminary (M.A. 1977), Lancaster Theological Seminary (M.Div. 1980), and Harvard Divinity School (Th.D. 1990).

What year did you move to Shanghai: Him and his wife, Sarah, first came to China in 2001 but did not get to Shanghai until 2004. Stayed for a year and then landed in Guangzhou in 2010, then finally came back to Shanghai in 2012.

Favorite place On the deck in the morning with a cup of coffee or a golf course in the early morning with the dew still on the ground.

Fun fact: He met Sarah on a blind date set up by her uncle because he had told him he liked to bungy jump (Sarah apparently had an interest in skydiving at the time)

Fun Fact: Joe studied business and medicine in University and played sports, but somehow ended up working at church playing music. Joe also loves the idea of reading, but almost never completes reading a book.

Favorite place, restaurant, or activity in Shanghai: any Mediterranean food restaurant, specially La Verbena at the bund, to enjoy nice Spanish tapas and a wonderful view. Going for Chinese food, Cantonese! and Asian in general, Haiku Japanese restaurant.

Fun Fact: Coming from the Caribbean country of Venezuela, Oscar loves to have fun and relax at the beach. Best holiday destinations for him and his family in this part of the world are the amazing beaches of Thailand and the Philippines: “Every time I have the chance to visit one of these places I can see the wonders of God’s creation and be thankful for His blessings in bringing me to the beautiful lands of Asia”.
